Rendezvous

Warm August day,
a man in a grey suit and hat
stood outside a bookshop
reading titles, and
smoking a cigarette.
A woman dressed in
a long, dark frock,
low heeled shoes and hat,
came up and tapped him
on his shoulder,
they briefly kissed,
walked off
didn’t hold hands;
first I speculated
if they were discreet
English lovers
but those shoes!
Must be a long time married
